#HUNTSMART: HOW TO AUTHENTICATE YOUR CHANEL BAGS

Each season, Chanel releases countless of bag designs that it’s mind-boggling how creative director Karl Lagerfeld does it! But as expected for one of the world’s largest luxury fashion houses, a lot of fakes pop-up within the secondhand market.

We here at HuntStreet.com believe in the importance of being able to distinguish between an authentic masterpiece and a fake knock-off, and below are just a few points that you can observe for yourself to make sure your bag is the real deal.

CC LOCK

The Cs on vintage designs have a flat finish, whereas more current Chanel bags have raised, rounded Cs. However Chanel now alternate, using both the raised and flat CC locks. Observe by checking that the lock’s right C overlaps the left C at the top, and the left C should overlap the right C at the bottom.

Another point to look out for is that the CC lock is centered. On a fake Chanel bag, it is positioned more haphazardly.

QUILTING

The stitching on most Chanel bags should maintain a consistent diamond pattern and should line up. However, this way of checking becomes problematic if the bag is old or well worn as leather stretches over time; so it is not uncommon for authentic vintage bags stitching to not line up perfectly so this process should only be more utilized with more contemporary bags.

CHAIN STRAP

The iconic chain and leather straps are a signature feature of Chanel bags and also a great way to identify a fake. Contemporary Chanel bags feature leather straps that are folded back on themselves and stitched through each link. Make sure the fold folding is seamless and not noticeable.

Another test is to check the overall weight of the chains; in this case, the chain strap on an authentic bag should be much heavier than its fake counterpart.

BRAND STAMP

Check the font and quality of the brand stamp. Many replicas use a thinner font and rush the branding so that it sits on the leather rather than being embossed into it.

Chanel stamp their logo and print text such as Made in France and Made in Italy inside their bags. The color of the brand stamping should match the color of the hardware, So with a silver hardware bag, expect silver stamping, whereas a gold hardware bag should be matched with a gold stamping.
